The Truth and the Bathroom Wall

Both MySpace and Facebook have applications available for installation on profiles that allow anonymous communication to the profile holder from anyone.  Let’s talk about 2 of the most popular applications both developed by third party developers (not MySpace or Facebook developers.)

On MySpace, the Truth Box Application has this to say about itself:

Ever wondered what your friends really thought about you. Add Truth Box to your profile to discover the truth people wanted to tell you. ANONYMOUSLY!!!

NEW – READ and POST SECRETS
Have a secret burning you up? Want to confess, but can’t share your secret with friends & family!
You’re not alone. Join thousands of others and confess your secret here ANONYMOUSLY!!!

NEW – Get rated ANONYMOUSLY in the TRUTH BOX HOT ZONE

On Facebook, the most popular app is the Bathroom Wall which reports 142,975 active monthly users and nearly 10,000 fans.

So, here is a sample scenario:

  • Mary installs the Truth application on her MySpace profile.
  • Jane sees that Mary has the truth app on her profile and decides to send her an anonymous message. Jane message says:  You are extremely unattractive and should stay home from school.

These applications are the cyber-bully’s dream come true because these apps allow a bully to threaten and demean others without accountability or responsibility.

Action: Review the applications installed on your child’s profiles.  Talk with your child about the dangers of anonymous communication and cyber-bullying.
