THE Truth Box – The latest buzz on MySpace

April 23, 2008

Here’s the 411:  A MySpace user (like your child or mine) installs the Truth Box application on their MySpace profile so that other MySpace users can say things to them anonymously. A very similar application is the Honesty Box which runs on both MySpace and Facebook. Both of these applications are marketed positively as a way to tell someone you have a crush on them or to “just have fun”. But, these apps are already being used for bullying as described in a recent New York Times story that disclosed Truth Box assaults as severe as “You should kill yourself; no one likes you.”  Some kids are choosing to keep the Truth Box off of their profiles (a VERY wise decision) while others install it and maintain they can handle it. The pressure on kids today can be 24/7 due to the constant online presence of peers. Talk with your child today about the dangers of the Truth Box or the Honesty Box. Encourage kids to take a stand against bullies by not using tools that make their job easy!
