Will MySpace Be Safer in 2008?

January 18, 2008

A Safer MySpace for minors is the clear intention of an agreement that was made on Monday, January 14, 2008 between MySpace and 49 states and the District of Columbia.  A set of principles have been established that both MySpace and the states hope will be adopted by all social networking sites.  It isn’t totally clear how the principles will be implemented but some examples are:

  • improved content monitoring
  • continued development of free monitoring software for parents
  • the establishment of a 24-hour hotline for law enforcement
  • the development of age verification software

It is great to see that strides are being made by the government and by social networking providers to create a safer cyberspace for kids. For more info on the  Social Networking Principles, view the MySpace press release: http://www.newscorp.com/news/news_363.html
